Whenever I hear golfers talking about hitting the ball farther, I hear about things like buying the latest driver, using the hottest new shaft, creating as much lag as possible on the downswing, keeping a flat wrist at impact, etc. The list goes on and on. While these things may possibly help you, simply put, hitting the ball far comes down to three things:

1) Sweet Spot Contact

In theory, five yards is lost for every quarter of an inch that you miss the sweet spot on your driver. That means if you miss the sweet spot by as little as an inch, you could lose 20 yards on your drive. All of a sudden you'd be hitting 2 clubs more for your next shot in to the green. It's harder to shoot lower scores that way!

One of the best ways I have ever encountered to improve your ball-striking is to keep your head as still as your flexibility allows during the swing (it's ok to move it some). What this effectively does is it will keep the vertebrae where your shoulder, neck, and spine intersect roughly in the same point in space during the swing. This vertebrae is a key measurement to the ball and moving it around too much makes it more difficult to get consistently good ball strikes. Both PGA Tour Hall of Famer, Johnny Miller, and Guinness World Record Holding Long Driver, Mike Austin, talk about this.

But regardless of whether a relatively still head is a part of the type of swing method you use, make sure you are consistently hitting the center of the club face. It makes a big difference.

2) Custom Fit Equipment

One time I was trying out a few new drivers on the range and out on the course. There were two in particular that looked very similar and were hard to tell apart visually, however, they differed in length, loft, weight, and flex. I hit them both the same accuracy-wise, but I literally hit one 50 yards farther than the other. Consequently, on the same holes, I would have to hit a 9-iron in to the green having used one driver, and a 5 or 6-iron in to the green with the other driver. You can imagine that it is a heck of a lot easier to shoot lower scores with the 9-iron.

To maximize your distance, it is very important to get a driver that is custom fit to your particular swing. While you can get "fitted" through a variety of manufacturers, at your golf course, or at a local golf store, I highly recommend using someone that is PCS-certified (Professional Clubmakers Society). You can be sure that anyone that has this certification has a very thorough background on being able to fit golfers of different sizes with different swings in to a driver that will help them get the absolute most out of their distance potential.

3) Swing Speed Training

Once you are using a swing method that gets you hitting the sweet spot consistently on your custom fit clubs, the next major thing you can do to hit the ball farther is to increase your swing speed.

For every 1 mph you can increase your swing speed, you will carry the ball 2.5 yards farther. When you consider that every day golfers swing 70-95 mph, Tour pros swing 105-130 mph, and the professional long distance drivers swing 135 mph to upwards of 150 mph, it's easy to see why people hit the ball different distances.

Unfortunately for many golfers of all levels they don't realize, don't believe, don't know how, etc that they can do increase their speed. However, the good news is that given the right guidance and training, it's actually quite easy to learn to swing faster. This is especially true if you are not already doing anything for your speed.

Increase your usable swing speed and you will hit longer drives.

Developing More Power in Your Golf Swing


How can you develop more power in your golf swing? This is probably a question that all of us want an answer to. Most of us go to great lengths to do whatever it takes to get that "power" into our drives off the tee. I think we probably all have some ideas of where 300-yard drives come from, but I want to give you the answers without any "fluff."

Golf swing power is the result of three specific factors. Two out of the three are much more important, but the third does have a bearing on the outcome of how far you hit that ball.

The first and probably most evident of the three is your swing mechanics. I bet you are not surprised by this one.

The second one is probably the least recognized of the three, but for many is the "key" to longer drives and the category that is given the least amount of attention. Number two is what we term golf strength. This is defined as how well your body is conditioned (i.e. fitness) to swing a golf club with maximum power. Probably the least understood of the three, and maybe the most needed by golfers in general. We will talk more about this later. Let us move on to number three in regards to power for your drives.

Number three is your equipment. Yes, equipment does make a difference in how far you drive the ball. The equipment manufacturers have let this fact be known, and I bet we all have gone to the pro shop probably more than twice to pick up a new driver that claims to give us another 20 yards on every drive. That extra 20 yards might not be down the middle of the fairway, but it will give you an extra 20 yards... could be left, could be right, or could be in the center of the fairway. That all depends on points one and two of this article. Equipment and technological advances have definitely lengthened the distance of our drives. But without better swing mechanics and your body in better golf shape, new technology will not help your game. A bad swing will produce a bad result, regardless of what type of "new" driver you may have just purchased.

Swing Mechanics

I think all of us are aware of how important the mechanics of a swing are when it comes to driving the ball down the fairway. It is essential, if you are over the top with your swing or come inside too much, you'll see that dreaded slice or snap hook. The drives will be short, too low, too high, left, right, or a combination of these if you are putting bad swings on the ball.

It is essential for a golfer to work on the mechanics of their swing, week in and week out, to improve their game. If it weren't important why would all these tour players have swing coaches that work with them on a consistent basis? The golf swing is such a finite, mechanically complex movement, that requires constant work to keep it highly efficient and in check.

One of the most common mistakes I see amateurs make is probably a lack of instruction. I see amateurs over and over at the driving ranges, week in and week out, pounding balls without any improvement. This, I feel, is a result of one of two things: 1) a lack of instruction or 2) low levels of golf strength. A lack of instruction leads to the development and ingraining of improper swing mechanics. This only results in slices, hooks, topping the ball, and hitting it fat on the course. And we all know that those types of swings lead to frustration and bad rounds of golf. I would suggest to most anyone to find a good instructor and take lessons on a consistent basis. This can only help your game in the long run. Now moving on the second point of how to achieve powerful drives and that is golf strength.

Golf Strength (Golf Fitness)

Golf strength is a term we use to describe the golf fitness level of an individual pertaining to swinging a club. This is much different than how much you can bench press or squat, which I like to refer to as "weight room strength." Understand that these two terms, golf strength and weight room strength, are very different. If you do not quite understand the difference, ask yourself one question: How many bodybuilders do you see teeing it up on Tour? The answer to that question is quite obvious, none!

It comes down to this idea: the mechanics of a golf swing require specific levels of flexibility, balance, stability, strength, endurance, and power to perform it efficiently. If your body does not have the required capacities of the aforementioned list, then the result will be? Anyone want to guess? Well, let me give you the answer: a less than optimal and less efficient swing than possible. Essentially, your body supports your swing much like a foundation supports the house you build upon it. I am sure that all of you would choose to build a house on a stone foundation rather than a sand foundation, wouldn't you? I will say that many of you make a different choice when it comes to your golf swing. I quite often see amateurs developing their swing on a "foundation of sand," not a good thing to do in my book.

Regardless of how much time you work on your swing mechanics, if your body does not have the "golf strength" to support your swing, you are limiting your potential. I have seen it numerous times, people practicing at the range who struggle, not because of trying to get better, but because their bodies are limiting what they can do with their swing. Quite often I see people with limited flexibility, poor balance capabilities, and low levels of strength and power. The bottom line is that your mechanics will not get better until you fix the body that swings the club!

Up to this point we have discussed the two most important ideas when it comes to power on the golf course. A review of the topics tells us that they are optimal swing mechanics and the proper levels of "golf strength" in the body. One without the other is going to leave you short when it comes to your potential in the game.

Again, I probably see point number two, golf strength, being addressed less often than swing mechanics when you get right down to it. The pros are all aware of the importance of golf strength, why not you?

Equipment

We have come to the final point, and that is equipment. I think the majority of golfers are aware of the technological advances that have occurred in golf equipment over the last 20 years. I mean, think about the '80's when we were still playing with woods that actually had wood club heads! Imagine that for a moment, and now we are using drivers with space age faces that shoot the ball off of them at warp speed. In addition, we have to mention the advances in terms of golf balls. How manufacturers design golf balls today makes a difference in how far they travel. What a lot of people do not realize is that the USGA has set standards on how "hot" driver faces can be and how "fast" balls can come off the face of drivers. Most clubs are reaching this limit, and anything past these USGA rules becomes illegal to play.

So what does that tell us?

1) Club manufacturers have done a great, and I mean great, job in the advancement of technology, and

2) to increase the distance on your drives you are now going to have to turn to points one and two of this article.

So what does improving your power really come down to?

It comes down to three simple ideas. Number one is improving your golf swing mechanics. Improved mechanics will improve your driving distance. Number two is improving your golf strength. By improving your body as it pertains to the golf swing you will improve your distance off the tee. Finally, equipment does make a difference, if you hit the ball correctly.

Golf Swing Lessons, Tips & Instruction - Choosing Golf Irons


As you may know from my website, a few years ago I was shooting in the mid-90s on my home course and now I'm putting up professional tournament scores in the 60s and 70s. I think one of the reasons I was able to do this was that I was willing to think outside the box when it came to my equipment.

Previously, I had been like many people and had iron sets from major manufacturers like Callaway and Titleist. If you're like I was, you probably have certain misses for certain clubs. For example, when I missed I would push my 3-5 irons, hit my 6-8 irons pretty straight, and pull my 9-LW. Because loft is the primary determinant of distance, I thought the clubs might be easier to hit if they were all the same length (some companies had previously tried this - you may have heard about Tommy Armour's EQLs), but the problem was that as the heads move from PW to 3-iron the weights got lighter. If you cut the shafts all the same length, the swing weights then go all over the charts. Needless to say, they did not catch on.

But then I came across a small company in Ohio that I had never heard of before called 1iron Golf. The owner, David Lake, apparently also believed in the idea of same length clubs...but what he did different was to make all the heads the identical weight. Ah ha!!! All of a sudden, the clubs had the same length, same weight, same swing weight, same MOI, same EVERYTHING!!!

I decided I had to try them, and you wouldn't believe how much it improved my iron play. It took about a month to get used to them (it was funny, even though I knew they were all the same club except for loft...I still made my same old misses), but after that it was smooth sailing. Loft for loft, weight for weight, etc, I still had the same yardage gaps as I had previously with my old irons.

Furthermore, as I like to used different clubs for chipping, my short game also improved because basically the only thing that changed from chip to chip was the height of my shot.

Free Golf Tips to Improve Your Game


In this article I will give you some free golf tips that will help you to improve your game. I know many golfers who reach a certain level and can't seam to progress any further. I have seen players hit a couple of good shots then a complete duff shot that just trickles of the tee.

For most golfers, just getting back to the basics can bring around a positive change in their swing. For some reason, we get to a stage in our game where we think we should be powering the ball 350 yards straight down the fairway. When this doesn't happen, we maybe just try too hard, I know because it has happened to me. So I hope these free golf tips will improve your game - they have helped me out over the years.

Check Your Golf Equipment

Maybe you have been playing for a while or even a few years with the same golf equipment. It is amazing how many golfers are using the wrong clubs or golf balls for their game or physique. The worst thing you can do is play with clubs that are too short or long for you. If in doubt, get your local golf course pro to check what length of clubs is right for you.

The flex of the shaft also has to be of the correct stiffness for your swing speed. The more swing speed and therefore power you can produce, then the stiffer the club needs to be. For example, if you can generate a lot of power, you should use a stiff club shaft, whereas a senior golfer and some women will probably need a club with more flex to help generate the extra power.

For golf balls, you have to choose wisely; don't be swayed by manufacturer's hype. You don't want to sacrifice control for distance, so if you still can't hit consistent and accurate shots, don't go for a distance ball. You could maybe try a two piece ball for some distance with a softer cover for more control. Alternatively, go for a three piece construction for a good combination of distance, control, and spin.

The Setup

Some free golf tips associated with the golf setup include the grip, stance, ball position, and address position. There are many types of grips but you should go with the one that is comfortable for you. Note: Hold your club tightly, don't listen to some golf "gurus" that say you should hold the club loosely or just tight enough so that it doesn't fly out of your hands!

The main thing to remember is that the palm of your left hand faces right and the palm of your right hand faces left towards the target. The thumb of your left hand points down the shaft and slightly to the right and your right thumb, on top of your left, points down the shaft and slightly to the left.

Your stance for a normal shot is all about being square and parallel. Line up your feet parallel to the target line with your feet facing slightly outwards. Your hips and shoulders should also be parallel to the target. With your arms straight, your elbows are slightly bent downwards, not outwards, keep your elbows tucked in.

Set yourself up the correct distance from the ball; not too far that you are reaching and not too close that you are crowding the ball. The correct golf ball position is in the middle of your stance for wedges and short irons; half way between center and your left heel for long irons; and opposite your left instep for the driver. Once you have taken a couple of practice swings, move into the address position, but don't take to much time in the address position thinking about the shot - you will tire your arms and legs.

The Golf Swing

There are dozens of free golf tips that I could give you for the golf swing, but they are beyond the scope of a single article. Instead, I will give you the fundamental things to remember when you go to swing the club. Some are so obvious, but it is surprising how many people forget them when in the middle of a round of golf.

First, don't listen to the advice of some golf "experts" that say you should relax when swinging a golf club. The golf swing is a relatively aggressive and physical exertion, so you can't be relaxed. Neither should you be tensed up; you need to be like boxer just before he throws a punch.

To swing a golf club properly you need to be balanced. Keep the weight evenly balanced between the ball of your feet and your heel and slightly favoring the heels. Another thing that helps to keep your balance is by keeping your head as still as possible throughout the swing. Due to the physical forces of the golf swing, your head will move slightly but this is normal - just don't jerk your head or you will never be balance.

Keep your eyes on the ball at all times during your swing. This includes the backswing, the downswing, and just after the impact position. Don't try to follow the ball with your eyes the moment the club impacts the ball - keep your eyes on where the ball was until your head and eyes are forced round by the movement of the follow through.

Your golf swing speed should be consistent from the backswing all the way through to the follow through. Don't make the mistake of starting your backswing slowly and then wanting to speed up the downswing to blast the ball into oblivion. We have all had that feeling, when we are poised to start our downswing, that we can hit the ball a mile. Resist the urge; a fluid and consistent speed will out hit anyone trying to hit the ball too hard.

I hope you will keep these free golf swing tips in mind the next time you are out on the course. Like I said, some are so obvious that you will be saying that you knew to keep your eyes on the ball or don't hit the ball too hard, but believe me, when you focus on your game and you consciously remember to implement these tips, you will immediately see improvement in your game.

Improving Golf Swing - Put Into Practice Some Great Tips


It is very important to take into account the posture of forearms and hands at moment of the impact. What Do Most Golfers Want? Improve My Golf, Play With Confidence - Too Many Tips Confuse Your Brain


I think we can safely say that one of the biggest challenges for many golfers is the problem of way too much thought, normally the wrong negative type at some pretty inappropriate times. "I hope I don't chunk this shot in the bunker, but I normally do and I'm really useless at bunker shots, so if I go in there then I'm looking at double bogey! I'm behind here and can't afford to blow another hole!"

Then of course there are the plethora of swing tips and advice given to the poor old unsuspecting golfer who is just asking, "Improve my golf game please!" And play with confidence. Golf has such big time gaps between shots that it is all too easy for the mind to wander off from the present moment and start thinking about potential problems with certain holes or with actual swing technique.

What with the golf shop racks full of magazines offering in many cases conflicting advice and certainly not designed for the individual reader, given they have never chatted with you let alone seen you play. If you think swing advice or tips work then ask yourself this question. "If there is even more advice and tips now than ever before, and it actually works, how come average handicaps have basically not changed in 30 years?"

Get one swing coach if you want to improve your swing. Choose him/her carefully and then commit to long term goals with them.
Practice your short game more than any other aspect of your swing.
Find and work with a qualified Club Maker to build you a set of custom clubs over a period of time that suits your budget. In many cases you will be surprised at how affordable custom built clubs can be. Be picky about finding an experienced and recommended club maker. Work on your mental game a lot. Either get yourself a sports psychologist or learn by mental game programs. You can safely work with a sports psychologist from a distance. Good practitioners can help you using modern communication techniques so don't be worried about asking a Mental Game Coach to work with you even if they are in another State or even country. Ideally though it would be nice if you could play the odd round of golf with your Sports Psychologist so they can see your on-course performance.
Never accept any unsolicited advice from other amateurs. Never follow quick tips, they don't work long term. Save your money buying magazines and invest it in Mental Training.
Ask lots of questions and have patience with your learning.
Enjoy the game of golf every time you go out, no matter how you play. Be grateful you can walk that course and hit a ball in beautiful surroundings with good (I hope) company.

Bill Pennington, who writes the OnPar blog for the New York Times, recently reviewed Tom Watson’s latest DVD Lessons of a Lifetime.

It has been an eventful 12 months for Tom Watson, from his near victory at last year’s British Open to his emotional exit at last week’s United States Open. Now is a good time for Watson to give his fans a glimpse into his thinking, his technique and his golf wisdom, and that is the principal ambition of Watson’s new, two-disc DVD, “Lessons of a Lifetime.” Watson has stored up a lot of instructional advice over the decades, much of it culled from the golfing greats he has known. But this is no quick-fix highlight reel of golf tricks worth trying.

That is obviously not Watson’s way of doing things. His DVD starts with fundamentals like grip, setup and alignment and takes you through just about everything else you might encounter on the golf course, including a downhill buried lie in a bunker. Some of us might just throw up our hands and declare that ball unplayable, but that obviously is not Watson’s way of doing things either.

So this is a DVD that is thorough in the thorough Midwestern way that Watson brings to most matters. It is about three hours, but moves quickly as it covers 46 chapters geared to full swing and short game shots. They are definitely lessons and would not be called “tips,” because each has been methodically thought out by Watson, the eight-time major winner. There is a treatise on how to hit a punch shot and a discourse on how to play in the wind  —  using wind machines.

It is not a laugh-fest but there is a sincere tone. My favorite parts of “Lessons of a Lifetime,” which retails for $49.95, are when Watson tries to motivate the viewer, the average golfer, to see that routine and difficult shots can be performed with consistency and confidence. To Watson it’s a matter of preparation and having a game plan for each shot. After he demonstrates what he means, he sometimes stops, stares into the camera like a veteran football coach giving a halftime speech and says: “That is how it’s done. And you can do it, too.”

And I’m telling you what, I just about jumped off my couch and ran to the nearest golf course to do that shot just as Watson had instructed me. I believed him. I could do it.

“Lessons of a Lifetime” is not just a collection of golf advice. It is Watson’s personal counsel. And following it has worked out pretty well for him.

What is a Golf Handicap?

A golf handicap, to put it simply, is a numerical measure of a golfer’s playing ability on a particular course. This number is used to make it more competitive between two golfers who want to compete on the same course, but one is better than the other. Below I will attempt to explain how to calculate your own handicap by hand (aside from being crazy, why on earth would you want to do this by hand?!).

I’m going to layout what the formula is for deriving your handicap for a particular course and in the next sections define what each of these numbers mean.

Course Handicap = Handicap index * Slope Rating / 113

Some Example Data

To help assist in this exercise, I’ll give some example data here which should help make some sense out of all of this.

Gross scores (these scores have been adjusted by ESC. Assume this golfer has a handicap index of 25 which means they can get a max of 8 strokes per hole): 85, 89, 82, 80, 79
Course Rating: 68.3

Based on the above data, we will be using 5 rounds to calculate this golfer’s handicap differential.

Handicap Differential

The handicap differential is used to determine your handicap index. It takes between 5-20 rounds of golf to determine your handicap. If you play 5 rounds of golf, you can use your lowest 1 differential to determine your handicap. If you play 20 rounds, you will take the average of your lowest 20 differentials. To determine your handicap differential, see the following formula:

Handicap differential = ( ESC score – course rating) × 113 / (slope rating).

See below for determining your ESC Score. Your ESC score is your adjusted gross score for handicap determination purposes only. Once you’ve figured out your ESC Score, you can determine your handicap differential.

Using our example data from before, since the golfer played 5 rounds, we will be using the lowest differential. We first need to calculate each differential to determine which is the lowest.

Handicap differential = (85 – 68.3) x 113 / 115 = 16.4

(89 – 68.3) x 113 / 115 = 20.3

(82 – 68.3) x 113 / 115 = 13.5

(80 – 68.3) x 113 / 115 = 11.5

(79 – 68.3) x 113 / 115 = 10.5

Obviously this data is all based on the same course, so we’re really only changing the adjusted gross score. In a real world scenario, each handicap differential would likely have different course rating and slope. In our example, however, we’ll be taking 10.5 as our handicap differential.

ESC stands for Equitable Score Control. It is used so a golfer who has a really bad hole doesn’t effect his handicap dramatically. It is only used in helping calculate handicap differential. If you don’t have a handicap index, use 8 for a maximum per hole score.

It’s important to clarify that a handicap is used on a per course basis. A golfer’s handicap index is what is commonly referred to as a golfer’s handicap. When someone asks “What’s your handicap?” they’re usually referring to your handicap index.

To derive your handicap index, use the average of the best 10 differentials of your past 20 total rounds, multiplied by 0.96. If you haven’t played 20 rounds, see our table above under the handicap differential section to determine how many differentials you need to use for the amount of rounds you have played.

Based on our example handicap differential, we’ll be using 10.5 x 0.96. This gives us a handicap index of 10.1.

For the course handicap, it is calculate using the following formula:

Course Handicap = Handicap index * Slope Rating / 113

So for our example golfer on this particular course:

10.1 x 115 / 113 = 10.3

So in the end, our golfer has a 10.3 handicap on this course after playing it for 5 rounds.

The slope rating is the USGA mark that indicates the measurement of the relative difficulty for a bogey golfer compared to the course rating. Slope rating is computed from the difference between the bogey rating and the course rating. The lowest slope rating is 55 and the highest is 155. The average slope rating is 113. To compute the handicap strokes from a given set of tees on a specific course with a slope of “s” given a handicap index of “h,” the following formula is used: (s/113)*h rounded to the nearest integer.

The rating of a particular course is a number generally between 67 and 77 that is used to measure the average “good score” by a scratch golfer on that course

In summary, golf handicapping is a very complicated science used to help bad players compete with better players. There really are three main steps in calculating your own handicap:

Step 1: Calculate your latest 5-20 differentials based on their adjusted gross scores

Step 2: Based on the amount of rounds you are using, calculate the average of the lowest differentials. If using 5 rounds, just use the lowest differential.

Step 3: Multiply the average of the differentials by 0.96. The number you arrive at is your handicap index. All that’s left to do now is get the slope and course rating for your course, plug in your handicap index and you have your overall handicap.

How to Avoid Topping the Ball on the Tee Shot

I’ve been reading a lot lately from Don Trahan over at www.peakperformancegolfswing.com. Don and Co. have a lot of good tips for beginners and more advanced golfers. Recently he talked about something that had been plaguing my golf game, topping the ball, especially on the tee shot. How many times have you skulled the ball on the tee shot and had the ball about 25 yards in front of you (if you were lucky)? If you’re anything like me, a lot.

Got a question on the blog from Gaetan. He says, “I’m having a problem topping the ball on my downswing. Not so much with my irons, but in the tee box. Any solution of what I may be doing wrong? Thank you.”

Since you’re doing it with the ball teed up rather than off the ground, I have to suspect, for starters, we might want to look at ball position. It may be too far forward. Consequently, since you’re trying to hit up, you’re hitting it late and you’re catching the top of the ball.

Another problem could be that with the driver or any ball teed up, if you’re aiming too far to the right, you have to pull out of the shot a little quicker, and trying to swing up, if you’re caught kind of centered in the stance or reverse weight shifting, that is going to have you coming out of the shot too fast and you’ll be topping it.

Those could be the two biggest issues. A third one could be maybe turning too much in the backswing,, possibly swinging it too long, so you have to turn harder to pull the club back out in front of you. That actually sends the club coming outside to in. Pulling to the left could cause a reverse weight shift which could have you coming over the ball and topping it.

On the other hand, if you had the ball a little too far back, you’d actually have to pull out of the shot to try and hit it because the ball’s too far back and you’re pounding down on it, but you’re trying to come up, so you get pulled out of the shot.

So we have a ball position issue here and, I think there is a high probability of over turning and over swinging, causing you to have to pull out of the shot. Plus, you could be pulling across the ball, causing reverse weight shift, making you pull out of the shot.

Always go back to fundamentals. Check your ball position, check your swing, and make sure that you’re staying 3/4, limited turn. I think if you get back to the limited turn and correct ball position, you should start hitting any shorts with any club out of the tee box very well.

Titleist was the overwhelming favourite at the 2010 Glenmuir PGA Professionals Championship at The Oxfordshire Golf Club, as PGA Club Professionals followed the example set by the world’s best players on Tour by choosing Titleist. The impressive counts across a number of product categories were led by the legendary Pro V1 and Pro V1x balls, which claimed the #1 position in the golf ball category. The quality of Titleist’s product range was further demonstrated by Titleist products topping the counts for drivers, fairway metals, utilities, iron sets and wedges* respectively. As well as being the firm favourite with the majority of the field, Titleist was also the choice of the champion, David Mortimer, who is based at the GUI academy at Carton House and trusted a host of Titleist equipment throughout his bag to claim victory.

The renowned Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x led the way at the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship, with 129 players putting their trust in the #1 ball in golf. This accounted for 82.7% of the field, more than 12 times the nearest competitor with 6.4%, and mirrors Titleist’s outstanding performance across worldwide professional tours, proving that the best players across all levels of the game prefer the feel and performance of Titleist balls.

Vokey wedges accounted for 53.3% of wedges in play at the Oxfordshire, over four times the nearest competitor with 12.5%.

Completing a fine week for Titleist at the Glenmuir PGA Professionals Championship, David Mortimer, trusted Titleist equipment throughout his bag to claim victory at the first extra hole against a fellow Pro V1x loyalist. Mortimer’s equipment included the Pro V1x ball, a Titleist 909D3 driver, Titleist 909F2 fairway and 909H hybrid, Titleist AP2 forged irons and Titleist Vokey Spin Milled pitching, approach, sand and lob wedges. Mortimer’s victory, with a 9-under par total, earns him a place in the European Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth next year and all but secures his place in the 2011 PGA Cup Team.

A further win for the #1 ball in golf at The Oxfordshire, as well as Titleist topping the count for drivers, fairways, utilities, irons and wedges proves once again that better players opt for the matchless performance of Titleist.

South African born and bred, Norman played junior golf with many of the worlds finest, including Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Rory Sabbatini and Tim Clark. What strikes you is the guy's love of the game and with that kind of enthusiasm it's no wonder he's so highly regarded as a teaching professional. The PING Tour W wedge – it’s as good as it gets and still the best on offer. That’s according the team at Today’s Golfer anyway.

Compared to Manchester United footballing legend Ryan Giggs – it’s been around a while but still oozes class – the PING wedge always delivers when it needs to. A fantastic club, and although this isn’t very exciting, still way ahead of the rest.

Leading the way - the new Mizuno wedge

With new laws coming into effect in the golfing world next year, Mizuno have reacted by releasing the new MP T-11 wedge that is complete with grooves that conform to the coming changes.
Available in either two-tone satin chrome or glare-resistant black nickel, the new wedges, which follow last year’s T-10 range is a fantastic looking club with great playability.
The new regulations won’t affect most amateur golfers for many years yet, but this release suggests Mizuno feels that enough people will be interested in replacing the wedge in their bag.
On the new T-11, whose head is grain flow forged from carbon steel for extra feel, the grooves are Quad-Cut to make them as big as they’re allowed to be under the new laws but the club manufacturer has introduced two different types of grooves to their wedges. These depend on the loft of the club.
Their clubs with less loft (50-54°), the wedges will feature, narrower yet deeper grooves that are suitable for full shots. The more lofted clubs (56-64°) will possess shallower, wider marking because these clubs are generally used for incomplete shots, which in turn means the ball isn’t as compressed on contact as much.
On the actual clubface, CNC milled score lines maintain the spin rates in comparison to the T-10 model.
If you decide to change to this from the T-10 model, you shouldn’t notice too much change in performance, yet you will be safe in the knowledge that your club conforms to regulations when they are finally brought into action for amateur golfers.

Pro Focus - Ben Clayton

Having a putter in your bag that you can trust is imperative and today we take a quick look at Nike’s Method 003 putter that has received rave reviews from industry experts and professionals alike.
In fact, the Method range is used on the Tour, the greatest endorsement it can possibly get. And it is another sign that Nike is starting to make massive inroads into the golfing equipment market.

New Mizuno JPX Series wedges

Mizuno have been extremely busy recently, and they have just announced the launch of their new JPZ Series game-improver wedges.
These fantastic new low range irons have been designed to complement the JPX-800 irons but will work well with any set of game-improver irons.
Designed with high handicappers in mind, the clubheads are slightly oversized which helps to inspire confidence during address of the ball and this also makes for an easier transition from your larger cavity-back pitching wedge.
The lofts have also been modified and feature stronger gradients, starting at 49°. This fits in with the modern trend of greater lofted irons from short range.
Mizuno have considered both forgiveness and versatility with the design of these wedges and the technology they have used helps this.
The cavity back spreads the weight around to help increase forgiveness but the sole has been triple cut for a beveled finish that leaves a trailing edge and rounded middle to make it play narrower to increase versatility and reduce the impact of the wider sole.
Having clubs like this in your bag will certainly help your game. Personally, short range shots and chipping are the hardest part of the game so to have a club which can increase your feel from these distances will help you to improve greatly.

In sport, you often get a ‘eureka’ moment that changes the game in one way or another but in golf they are few and far between. That was until 35-years-ago when the first ever hybrid was made – the Cobra Baffler.
